69% of B2B Buyers Still Validate AI Insights With a Rep

July 24, 2026·4 min read

THE SHORT VERSION: Gartner's latest buyer survey finds that 69% of B2B buyers still turn to a sales rep to validate AI insights before acting on them, even as AI tools shape more of the research phase. Buyers aren't replacing sellers with AI, they're using AI to arrive at the conversation with sharper questions.

What happened

Gartner released survey findings on May 20, 2026 showing that 69% of B2B buyers turn to sales reps specifically to validate insights they first got from AI tools. The same research found buyers were 28 percentage points more likely to say a rep helped them advance to the next purchase stage than generative AI alone, 32 points more likely to say a rep made them feel confident in the decision, and 39 points more likely to say a rep actually understood their needs. This lands alongside Gartner's separate finding that 67% of B2B buyers now prefer a partly rep-free research process and 45% used AI tools during a recent purchase. Read together, the two data points describe a buyer who researches independently with AI, then deliberately seeks out a human to stress-test what the AI told them before committing budget.

Why buyers still validate AI insights with a human

This is the clearest signal yet that AI research and human selling aren't competing for the same job. AI compresses the research phase, buyers arrive at a call already having formed a point of view. But Gartner's data says that point of view isn't trusted until a person confirms it, which means the seller's job has shifted from delivering information to confirming and contextualizing information the buyer already has. Founders who still run discovery calls as if the buyer knows nothing are wasting the trust-building moment Gartner just measured. The rep who can immediately engage with what a buyer's AI research already surfaced looks more credible, not less.

  1. Ask what AI told them before you pitchOpen discovery calls by asking directly what the buyer's AI research turned up about your category and your company. This does two things at once: it surfaces what you're up against, including any inaccurate AI summaries of your product, and it signals you understand how they actually buy now.
  2. Correct AI misinformation about your product in real timeIf a buyer repeats something ChatGPT or Perplexity got wrong about your pricing, positioning, or fit, address it directly and explain why the AI summary is incomplete. Gartner's data suggests this validation moment is where deals actually turn, not the initial pitch.
  3. Train reps on confidence, not just informationSince buyers rate reps highest on making them feel confident and understood, not on information delivery, coach your team to ask what's still unresolved after their AI research rather than repeating a deck. Confidence-building questions close the validation gap Gartner measured.

By the numbers: Gartner also found 67% of B2B buyers prefer a partly rep-free purchase process and 45% used AI tools during a recent purchase, meaning the same buyer who researches with AI still wants a rep to close the trust gap before signing.

What to do this week

Add one question to your discovery call script this week: what has your research turned up so far, including anything from AI tools? Track the answers in your CRM notes for a month. If you keep hearing the same AI-sourced misconception about your pricing or category, fix it at the source, starting with your website copy and your G2 listing, since that's likely where the AI is pulling from.
