Original Research Content Is Beating AI Thought Leadership

July 25, 2026·5 min read

THE SHORT VERSION: TopRank Marketing and Ascend2's Answer Engine report on B2B thought leadership finds original research content is what actually earns trust: 93% of marketers say it drives engagement and leads, but only 32% of professionals currently discover that content through GenAI tools, leaving most firms invisible in the channel that's growing fastest.

What happened

TopRank Marketing and research partner Ascend2 surveyed nearly 800 senior B2B marketing leaders across the US and UK for their Answer Engine report, then kept the findings live and updated through mid-2026 as AI search adoption accelerated. The headline finding: 97% of B2B marketers call thought leadership critical to full-funnel success, yet only 43% extend it past the acquisition stage to retain customers post-sale. The report's sharpest data point is about substance versus noise. Original research-based content outperforms opinion pieces and roundups by a wide margin: 93% of marketers using it call it effective at driving engagement and leads, and that number climbs further among teams who pair it with credible outside voices. Meanwhile 57% of marketers admit thought leadership content increasingly feels indistinguishable from competitors', and 72% specifically worry AI will make that sameness worse.

Why original research content is the exception AI can't flatten

AI models are excellent at producing plausible-sounding opinion content and terrible at producing a proprietary data point nobody else has. That asymmetry is why original research content survives the flood of AI-generated posts crowding every feed: a survey of your own customers, a benchmark pulled from your own product data, or a study you commissioned can't be replicated by a competitor's model overnight. The report found 73% of marketers who frequently collaborate with outside experts rate their research content as very effective, versus just 29% of those who don't, meaning the research alone isn't enough without a credible voice attached to distribute it.

  1. Turn your own product data into a research assetLook at what your product already tracks, response times, close rates, usage patterns, and package one real finding as a standalone stat with methodology attached. A single defensible number beats a twelve-page opinion piece for earning citations and shares.
  2. Attach a named expert to every research pieceBefore publishing, add a quote or co-byline from someone with credible standing in your space, internal or external. Research content performs far better paired with an outside voice than when a brand publishes data alone.
  3. Extend research content past the saleMost teams stop promoting research once a deal closes. Repurpose your best original data into an onboarding or renewal-stage asset instead, since only 43% of marketers currently do this and it's an easy way to differentiate with content you already made.

By the numbers: Only 32% of professionals surveyed say they currently discover thought leadership through GenAI tools like ChatGPT or Perplexity, versus traditional search and social, meaning the channel is small today but the one most likely to keep growing.

“Thought leadership requires data. It requires research. Some sort of independent or second or third-party research forms the basis of the perspective... Without that foundation, you're just publishing opinion.” — Cindy Anderson, CMO, IBM Institute for Business Value

What to do this week

Pull one number your product or business already tracks that a competitor couldn't easily replicate, and draft a single LinkedIn post presenting it as a standalone finding with the methodology in one sentence. That's the smallest version of original research content, and it's a faster trust-builder this week than another opinion post.
