Enterprise buyers are now picking one for each job, and the category has effectively split rather than consolidated.

What happened

Since OpenAI launched Atlas in October 2025 and Perplexity made Comet free in the same month, the two agentic browsers have been treated as direct competitors. The 2026 usage data tells a different story. In a comparative breakdown by Human Security, Atlas is described as the stronger tool for browser automation, memory-assisted follow-up, and multi-step execution across pages — the vendor-shortlist-to-drafted-email workflow. Comet is described as the stronger tool for research, synthesis, and source-linked knowledge work — the buy-side research and competitive-intel workflow. Perplexity's launch of Comet Enterprise added compliance controls, workflow tools, and enterprise IAM support, doubling down on the knowledge-work positioning. Neither vendor is marketing itself as the other one is being used for. The category is splitting along the same line that has split every knowledge-work tool since Notion and Airtable diverged: knowing versus doing.

For B2B vendors building on top of either browser — or for founders picking one for internal workflow … the positioning split matters because it predicts the roadmap. Comet's roadmap will move toward citations, source-graph confidence, and knowledge-worker output. Atlas's roadmap will move toward workflow, task chaining, and automation reliability. Betting on the wrong one for your use case now means rebuilding integrations in 12 months when each vendor drops the feature you thought was table stakes. It also predicts distribution: content that gets cited by Comet will not always get executed on by Atlas, so B2B teams need to be legible to both.
