What happened

Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign audited Reddit's AI Answers feature, tracing 30,000 AI-generated answers back through 14.68 million source comments across 20 advice and support subreddits, in a study covered by Search Engine Journal on September 17 and posted on arXiv. The pattern was consistent: formally-written comments were 49% more likely to be selected for an AI answer, while personal-experience comments, the ones written in first person with real anecdotes, were 21% less likely to be selected. Selected comments also skewed toward the 91st percentile of in-thread popularity and were posted a median of 1.2 hours into a thread, versus the 45th percentile and 5.9 hours for comments that weren't picked.

Reddit threads increasingly feed not just Reddit's own AI Answers but downstream AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity answers about vendors and categories, which means this selection bias reaches further than Reddit's own app. The starkest number in the study: first-person "I" and "my" language drops from 3.3% of source comments to just 0.06% of what actually makes it into a final AI answer. That's the exact voice, a real practitioner describing what they actually did, that makes Reddit valuable for B2B buyer research in the first place, and it's being filtered out almost entirely by the system that's supposed to summarize it. If you're counting on an authentic Reddit comment to reach a buyer through an AI answer, the format of that comment is working against you before the content even gets considered.

  1. Post early in a thread's life, not after it's settled
    Selected comments went up a median of 1.2 hours into a thread versus 5.9 hours for the rest. If a relevant thread appears in your category, respond within the first couple of hours, not after the conversation has already found its top comment.
  2. Lead with a clear, formal claim before adding color
    Structure your top comment with a direct, well-formatted answer first, then add the personal-experience detail after. The study suggests formal framing gets selected even when the substance underneath is still genuinely first-person.
  3. Don't treat Reddit as a one-shot pitch channel
    Since already-popular comments get selected disproportionately, build a small amount of consistent, genuine participation in relevant subreddits over time rather than a single drive-by comment when you need visibility.

By the numbers: Formal-language comments were 49% more likely to be selected for an AI Answer (odds ratio 1.488), personal-experience comments were 21% less likely (odds ratio 0.789), and first-person language usage collapsed from 3.3% of source comments to 0.06% of final selected answers.
