LinkedIn Cold DM Reply Rate Falls to 1.8%, Expandi Reports

The short version

THE SHORT VERSION: Expandi's 13.2M-connection benchmark, published this month, finds the average LinkedIn cold DM reply rate has fallen from 3.2% in 2024 to 1.8% in 2026. Personalised connection messages still hit 9.36%, and trigger-timed outreach adds another 32%. The blank cold DM is a dead lever this quarter.

What happened

Expandi published its State of LinkedIn Outreach H1 2026 report, drawing on 13.2 million connection requests, 6.7 million outbound messages, and 3.7 million accepted connections routed through its platform between May 2025 and April 2026. The headline finding: pure cold DM reply rates have nearly halved in two years, from 3.2% to 1.8%. Connection requests with a personalised note still convert at 9.36% versus 5.44% blank, and messages timed to a trigger event, such as a role change or funding, land 32% more replies on average. First-degree Messenger response rates sit at 16.8%.

The 1.8% floor changes the outbound math founders were running last year. Sending 500 blank cold DMs to book ten calls now requires 600 to 700, and LinkedIn's own restriction algorithms flag that volume as automation-adjacent. Meanwhile, warm surfaces are widening: first-degree messenger still returns 16.8%, and trigger-timed sends outperform cold by more than five times. The channel has not died. It has bifurcated into a warm lane that still books meetings and a cold lane that quietly burns senders and inbox reputation.

  1. Cut volume by 30% and reroute into first-degree
Every account has 500 to 3,000 first-degree contacts underused. Pull a list of first-degree connections your ICP overlaps with, then send a specific message referencing one thing they posted this quarter. Expandi's 16.8% first-degree Messenger rate is the highest-yielding surface on the platform, and it takes fewer sends to book the same calls.
  2. Layer trigger data into every outbound sequence
Signal-based sends convert 32% higher on average, per the Expandi data. Push funding announcements, executive role changes, and buyer intent flags into the campaign layer using Clay, Common Room, or UserGems. If a rep cannot name the trigger behind a send, the send should not go this week.
  3. Rewrite connection notes as a specific question
Personalised connection notes still hit 9.36% acceptance versus 5.44% blank. That gap widens further when the note is a specific question, not a compliment. Ask about a decision the prospect made, or a tool they mentioned. Save the pitch for after acceptance, not before, because compliments read as templates in 2026.

By the numbers: Belkins' parallel 2026 study finds AI-written LinkedIn openers hit 4.19% reply rates versus 2.60% for non-AI, but AI follow-ups underperform human follow-ups on every campaign it tracked. The lever is the opener, not the sequence.

What to do this week

Open Expandi, HeyReach or Salesloft LinkedIn Sync and cut your cold DM volume by 30% this week. Move the freed capacity into a first-degree Messenger campaign built around one signal, funding, role change, or a specific post. Write the opener as a question a real founder would ask, not a template. Target 50 sends per rep per week on this lane; the response rate math beats the old cold volume by a wide margin.
