The short version

THE SHORT VERSION: Google added image generation to AI Overviews on July 14, 2026, using its Nano Banana model to turn a text prompt into a custom visual inside the answer box. AI Overviews image generation means the AI answer itself can now originate visuals, not just text, which changes what “showing up” in AI search actually requires.

What happened

Google announced the update in a July 14 post on its official blog, tying the launch to the 25th anniversary of Google Images. The feature lets AI Overviews generate a custom image directly from a user's query, built on the Nano Banana model, the same image system Google folded into Search and NotebookLM in October 2025 after it had already produced more than 5 billion images inside the Gemini app. The rollout starts in English and expands gradually to regions that already support image creation in AI Mode. Google frames the move partly as a response to publisher pressure over AI Overviews suppressing clicks: search chief Nick Fox has publicly argued AI Mode and AI Overviews still send billions of clicks to sites every week, even as third-party trackers from Semrush and Sistrix logged elevated ranking volatility through June and July outside any announced core update.

For B2B founders, the direct SEO threat is smaller than the brand-visual threat. Nobody is Googling a SaaS pricing comparison and getting an AI-generated image instead of a click to your site, not yet. But image generation confirms a broader pattern: AI answer layers are moving from summarizing your content to synthesizing new content on top of it, without necessarily crediting or linking to you at all. Once an AI Overview can generate the diagram, chart, or comparison graphic a buyer wants, it has one less reason to click through and see how you'd have presented it yourself. The visual layer of AI search is becoming as contestable as the text layer already is, and most founders haven't audited it even once.

  1. Check what Google generates for your category.
Search your core category term inside Google's AI Mode or a live AI Overview and see what image, if any, it renders. If Google can already synthesize a competent visual for a “[your category] comparison chart” or “dashboard” query, that's one more reason a buyer never reaches your actual product pages.
  2. Bake your brand into every exported visual.
Add visible logos, URLs, or a distinct color system to charts, screenshots, and diagrams you publish, so even if an AI model references or resembles your visual, the origin is unmistakable in any screenshot or export a buyer saves and shares internally.
  3. Keep proof visuals a model can't fabricate.
Lean on real product screenshots, live dashboards, and customer-specific outputs, images a generative model cannot plausibly recreate from a prompt alone, since those are the visuals still worth a click instead of an AI-generated substitute.

By the numbers: Nano Banana has generated more than 5 billion images since its August 2025 debut in the Gemini app, and AI Overviews already appear on roughly 48% of Google queries, per third-party tracking.

What to do this week

Open Google's AI Mode and run your top three category and comparison search terms, note whether an image now renders in the answer, and if it does, screenshot it and compare it against your own best marketing visual for the same query. If Google's version is already competitive, prioritize adding a distinct, branded visual, a proprietary chart format or a real product screenshot, to the page you'd want ranked, since generic stock-style graphics are now the easiest thing for Nano Banana to replace.
