Content Updated in 30 Days Now Gets 3.2x More AI Citations

The short version

THE SHORT VERSION: Content updated in the last 30 days now earns 3.2 times more AI citations than older pages, according to Profound's latest cross-engine analysis. Only 38 percent of AI Overview citations still come from the top 10 organic results, down from 76 percent a year ago, so freshness has replaced traditional ranking as the primary lever for LLM visibility.

What happened

Profound's September citation pattern report, drawn from more than 680 million citations across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, shows a decisive tilt toward recency. The Profound analysis puts the AI citations freshness multiplier at 3.2x for pages updated in the last 30 days versus otherwise-comparable older content. The report also documents the collapse of Google's traditional ranking as an AI Overview proxy: only 38 percent of AIO citations now come from the top 10 organic results, down from 76 percent less than a year earlier. Cross-engine overlap remains tiny, with only 11 percent of domains cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity, and Wikipedia still absorbing 47.9 percent of ChatGPT sources while YouTube leads Perplexity at 32.4 percent.

Evergreen SEO playbooks were built on the assumption that a good page compounds authority over years. The 3.2x freshness multiplier upends that math for AI visibility. A B2B page that ranks in Google's top three but has not been touched in 18 months is now materially less likely to be cited by an LLM than a competitor's newer page that ranks fifth. The upside is smaller companies can now buy AI visibility with cadence instead of backlinks, but only if their content operations can sustain a 30-day refresh loop across their highest-intent pages.

  1. Identify your top 20 highest-intent pages
Pull the pages that already convert or serve high-purchase-intent queries. Rank them by revenue attribution, not by traffic. These are the pages worth entering into a 30-day refresh loop because the freshness multiplier compounds where money is actually made.
  2. Set a 30-day refresh calendar for those pages
Refresh means changing the publish date, updating stats, adding a 2026 quote, swapping one example, and republishing. Cosmetic edits do not trigger the multiplier. Ahrefs' Content Score and Semrush's Content Audit both flag pages older than 30 days on their AIO tracker.
  3. Split content operations by engine target
Only 11 percent of domains overlap between ChatGPT and Perplexity, so a single piece of content cannot be optimized for both. Route ChatGPT content toward Wikipedia-style authority signals and long-form primary research, and route Perplexity content toward YouTube embeds and Reddit references.

By the numbers: Reddit sits at roughly 40 percent of AI citations across engines, Wikipedia takes 26 to 48 percent of ChatGPT sources, and Google AI Overviews now cites Reddit in the top two of most result sets.

What to do this week

Export your 20 highest-revenue pages from Google Search Console and check the last-modified date on each. Any page older than 30 days goes into a refresh queue with a due date this week. Add a fresh 2026 stat, a new customer quote, and update the publish date on republish. Then set a recurring 30-day audit inside Ahrefs Content Explorer so the refresh cycle runs on autopilot.
